Information For Duramax Owners

Brief History

General Motors had fallen behind in the market in the late 1990's in regards to their Diesel Engine offerings, with the Detroit Diesel outputting abysmal power and torque numbers it was time for something new. In comes the partnership with the leader in diesel engine technology, Isuzu. This was the beginning of one of the best partnerships in the industry. The first Duramax was introduced in 2001 and revolutionized the light duty pick up truck market as it was among the first production vehicles to have a common rail fuel system. Over the years they made many revisions to improve the fuel system, cooling system and power numbers to stay ahead of the competition! For a full detailed History of the Duramax click here.

Different Engine Iterations

The Duramax engines are identified by the different Regular Production Option, RPO, codes. This is a 3 digit alphanumeric designation that is on all of the vehicles. For this we will focus on the GM 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, as this is the most common application for these engines.
