I installed the Brand New Fuel Injection Control Module (FICM) on my 2004.5 LLY Duramax about 1000 miles ago, and so far, it’s been rock solid. My truck was struggling with issues like limp mode and rough idling, so replacing the FICM was a necessary step, and this unit has delivered.
Before swapping in the FICM, I followed GM’s Technical Service Bulletin (TSB #05-06-04-047B) to inspect and replace the injector wire harness (part #98017958). This was critical to rule out any issues with chafed or broken connectors, especially near the alternator bracket where LLY engines are prone to problems on cylinders #2 and #7. Addressing the harness first gave me confidence that the new FICM wouldn’t be stressed by underlying wiring issues.
The FICM is a brand-new unit, not remanufactured, which was a big reason I chose it. With OEM Bosch FICMs discontinued, I wanted a reliable replacement, and this fit the bill. Installation was straightforward—plug-and-play with no programming needed, which saved me a trip to the dealer. It mounts on the passenger-side valve cover and took about an hour with basic tools.
Over the past 1000 miles, the truck has been running smoothly with no limp mode, no injector codes (like P0201-P0208, P2146, or P2149), and a much steadier idle compared to the rough “tractor mode” I dealt with before. The engine feels responsive for daily driving and some light towing, and I haven’t noticed any hiccups. One minor issue during installation: one of the isolation bushings was missing, and I found out GM discontinued them. They’re hard to source, so check yours before starting the job. I worked around it, but it’s worth noting.
Overall, the FICM has been a great investment. It’s built to match or exceed OEM specs, and after 1000 miles, it’s restored my LLY Duramax’s reliability. It’s not cheap (around $1000-$1500 depending on the retailer), but for anyone battling injector control issues, it’s worth it—just make sure to address the wiring harness first. I’ll keep an eye on its performance and update if anything changes, but for now, I’m very satisfied!
